HERBS: Eastern vs. Western Approach Why Choose? Get Both in One Formula!
There are two schools of thoughts regarding herbs: Eastern and Western. The Eastern approach is somewhat of an art form, involved with choosing just the right part of the right plant grown in the right soil in the right climate. The Western approach takes a look at the Eastern approach and sees that different plants can have differing compounds and differing strengths, so that you would never be completely sure just what the dosage is of each capsule/powder/tablet. In the West, we like to quantify and standardize, so chemists figured out what they thought the important compounds were for each herb and created “standards” for each herb, so that any user would feel confident the product he or she consumed was as potent as any other product that met the same standard. The Eastern approach countered that reasoning by saying that there was no guarantee that those compounds were actually the important part of the herb; that they may in fact just be marker compounds and it is the interaction between all the substances in the herb that synergistically delivered the effects looked for, and that by standardizing to just one or two compounds, the Western approach might in fact be missing what makes the herb useful.
Both arguments have merit, but the marketplace in the US has decided that standardized extracts are preferable.
Ultra Botanicalsis unique in what it offers. It does both in the same product. It sells its herbal supplements by the standardized extract, but includes with the extract 700-1725 mg of the whole part of the plant that is significant (leaf, stem, seed, etc., depending upon what is significant in the herb) (The one exception is the Grapeseed Extract. Not able to find Grapeseed Powder, they included 700 mg of Rose Hip Seed Powder, another similar bioflavonoid).
In essence, Ultra Botanicals sells you the extract and gives you 700+ mg of the whole herb for free! We like this practice. We like the concept of getting both for the price of one, and figure there might well be an added synergistic value to their products over others because of the combination of the two.
