Bill Lockton is the founder of Locked On Health, and coaches both runners and newer triathletes. As Mentor Coordinator (you might translate that as the 'coach of the coaches') and many-year Board member of L.A.LEGGERS, one of the country's largest running clubs (1,300+ members), he has years of experience with beginners, intermediates, and advanced runners.
Bill is nationally ranked as an ultramarathoner, specializing in distances of more than 100 miles. Among his accomplishments, he ran the Badwater Ultramarathon, known as the most grueling footrace on the planet,as his very first ultra. Running it in its most grueling year, he came in 6th man, ahead of many world famous endurance athletes. The race starts at the lowest point in the United States, Badwater in Death Valley, goes 135 miles over 2 mountain ranges and up to the Whitney Portals, the entrance of the climb to the peak of Mt Whitney. Because the parks commission won’t allow the race to continue on the trail, it ends at the Portals, but Bill went the rest of the way to the peak and back, an additional 22 miles, to make his total 157 miles. He quite literally ran from the lowest point in the United States to the highest (in the "lower 48"). Held in late July, the temperature for the race is typically in the 120s. The second hottest year was 128, but Bill's year hit 133 degrees! CBS-TV followed his training and race as part of a piece on extreme sports, submitting Bill’s segment for Emmy consideration – and won!
He also competes highly at the 24-Hour National Championships - a race in which the person who runs the farthest in 24 hours, wins. The picture above was taken within an hour of coming in 8th American Male at the 2006 National Championships.
Take his advanced degree heavy in biochemistry, combine that with a life-long love of physics and years of study of proper running form, then mix in a decade of coaching himself and thousands of others, and you get a unique breadth of knowledge about running, nutrition, hydration, and training that is second to none.
Whether you are a new athlete/runner who wants to make the investment to start out correctly or a seasoned athlete looking to make a jump in performance, you’ll be pleased with your results.
In the picture above, Bill is standing between John Geesler and Roy Pirrung at the completion of the 2006 National Championships for the 24-Hour Run where Bill came in 8th man in the US (open category, not age group). A 24-Hour Run is a race in which everybody runs for 24 hours, and the person who runs the farthest, wins. John is often the US's best performer at the World Championships, and Roy, a member of UST&F's Ultramarathon Hall of Fame, has been the captain of every National Team the US has ever had. In the US National Championships that year, Roy came in 2nd American man, John 7th, and Bill 8th. The top 6 runners are offered the opportunity to represent the US at the World Championships.
